In 1688, King James VII of Scotland and II of England was ousted in the so-called Glorious Revolution. Yet in parts of the Scottish Highlands, there was a lingering loyalty to him and his line. This is a ground-breaking study in the involvement of the northern Highlands of Scotland (here defined as Sutherland, Caithness, Ross-shire and Inverness, though not Inverness-shire) in the major Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745. It examines aspects of the politics, religion and commerce of the region which led to the continued involvement of some clans in the cause of the exiled House of Stuart in the first half of the eighteenth century. The cover shows the former Inverness Castle. Daniel Defoe wrote concerning its role in the 1715 rebellion in A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain: ...this post was of singular importance in the time of the late insurrection of the Lord Mar for the Pretender; when, although his party took it, they were driven out again by the country, with the assistance of the Earl of Sutherland, and several other of the nobility and gentry, who stood fast to the kings interest. Edmund Burt, an engineer who visited Inverness in 1730, also wrote: The Castle stands upon a little steep hill closely adjoining to the town, on the south side, built with unhewn stone; it was lately in ruins, but is now completely repaired, to serve as a part of the Citadel of Fort George... This Castle, whereof the Duke of Gordon is hereditary Keeper, was formerly a Royal Palace. It was subsequently destroyed by the Jacobites in 1746. The better-known British Army fortification also called Fort George at Ardersier was begun following the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and completed in 1769. This text was written by the author as a Dissertation for the award of Master of Letters (MLitt) in the History of the Highlands and Islands with the University of the Highlands and Islands, and was accepted as such in 2021.
