The classic Tragic Hero is well known in Shakespeares plays. In Act I we meet the hero acclaimed and loved by his circle of friends and family, such as a Romeo, or a Hamlet. By Act V, after many character flaws that arise, the hero dies in disgrace. Who are the American Tragic Heroes ? Almost monthly, sensational media news reports expose brilliant men from political, religious, theatrical, and professional sports milieus that bring about their own ultimate downfall. We hear a report about the congressman that broadcasts an internet photo of his penis. There is the evangelical television minister caught with a hooker in his car, or the admired movie and television comedian charged with seducing women for years that he first drugged into submission. We hear the charges against a renowned football coach that for years sexually molested young boys. What do these tragic heroes have in common? They all have fame, wealth, and innocent loving spouses, who share in the shame and infamy and are victims of a husbands basic character flaw. When I began a genealogical study of my own ancestors, I discovered a great uncle Daniel, and an uncle Herman, who followed the pattern of the American Tragic Hero, but in a less renowned way. They were heroes in their own families--brilliant and admired in their early years-- attaining wealth and the respect of their wives and children.. However, through their own character flaws they ended their lives in disgrace and failure.
