This is the 2nd in a line of historical novels on the experiences of combat rifle Jr. Officers/ Non Coms, in directing ground combat troops in RVN, contesting with 2 powerful and canny enemies; the N. Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong, the latter the arm of the S. Vietnamese insurgents. The combat is brutal, unforgiven and grinds up all combatants participating. Our narrator is an experienced and competent, former Platoon Leader in a famed battalion in the First Infantry Division; stationed North of Saigon, along Highway 13, leading to Cambodia. The former Lt. becomes involved with a Charleston lady, while recuperating from 2 serious combat wounds; she watches over him as he wrestles with his desire to serve; while handicapped by his wounds. Before leaving the Army for war injuries, he introduces instruction to remedy deficiencies in the decision making, inherent in all combat. The introduction of methodology is paramount in saving the lives of the riflemen, who carry the load in RVN. This book is hard-hitting, accurate and gives the reader a slice of the intricacies of combat, as well as the relations between our supporting elements and direct combat forces.
