In any school class there will be a wide range oflearning style preferences. To develop a writingcurriculum that meets the needs of each style is apursuit that has been only superficially explored. This report addresses issues involved inunderstanding the writing needs of a wide range ofstyles. The author studied one class often-year-olds, becoming their full-time teacher forone year, and implementing a programme of textproduction that took the students from monomodal, handwritten texts to fully multimodalcomputer-mediated texts. By observing the changesover a ten-month period and analysing in detail thelearning environment that was the same for all 26students, it has been possible to see strong patternsemerging from the data. This patterning has beenmatched with the cognitive styles of the students asassessed by a cognitive styles analysis. By invokingthe theory of transmediation or transduction it hasbeen possible to deduce that a students styleaffects the way that material is transferred acrossthe semiotic modes.
