In January 1974 Donald McClintock decided to build a sail boat and sail to the Caribbean. His plan was to build a vessel over a five year period, then take a 5-year early retirement to cruise in a place of Endless Summer. Some twists and turns ensued, but the dream lived on. Finally, on 16 September 1982 Donald and his partner Mavis Newbury cast off the lines of their 32' wooden sloop Ruffian II from a dock at the Thunder Bay Yacht Club and headed out into Lake Superior. They would navigate through the Great Lakes to Toronto, then the Oswego Erie Canal System to New York. Welcomed by a placid Atlantic for the first 24 hours at sea, contentment and optimism of the couple were severely tested by a 3-day hurricane force storm which had not been forecasted. This was the worst of trials to be endured, however it emphasized that certain dues were to be paid before the best of dreams would be realized. Those dreams would be surpassed by a ten year yachting lifestyle, a lifestyle of which visiting Charter Guests would often remark, "You're living the life that most people only dream about!" This is a true life story about the importance of following your dream, even though you may not be sure just where it might lead.
