This research project investigates the geography ofdeer in a suburban environment, and explores theeffects, the presence and the movement of deerpopulations on human opinions, attitudes, health, andpolitics. The first section deals with the biologyand habitat of deer with special emphasis on thesuburban environment. It identifies four kinds ofland classes in suburbia that contribute to thepresence of deer. It further calculates the densityof deer in one-hectare parcels for the entire studyby developing a predictive model. The second sectionplaces special emphasis on deer related vehicleaccidents since they are such a highly chargedcomponent of human interaction with deer. Itexplains deer vehicle accidents in terms ofquantifiable environmental factors, and identifiesthose land classes that are adjacent to major roadsthat contribute to the occurrence and number of deervehicle accidences. The last section, a survey ofAmhersts human population, demonstrates thediversity and the complexity of opinions about deer. It further underscores the difficulty thatdecision-makers must overcome in order to solve theproblems regarding deer in suburbia
