Masters Thesis from the year 1993 in the subject Sociology - Relationships and Family, Durham University, language: English, abstract: Attempts to account for the prevalence of womans inferior position in the home or in the labour markets still leave unexplained the persistence of inequalities between the sexes in both domains despite the presence of increasing female labour participation. The study assesses the importance and extend to which womens life cycle variables shape their economic activity and perpetuate their subordination. Finally, the analysis suggestes that ideological or cultural structures are the more important correlates of womens economic activity and that life-cycle variables cannot adequately account for the persistence of their low status in the labour force.
