This vintage book contains Lewis Theobald’s early eighteenth-century play Double Falsehood. It is widely believed to be an adaptation of a lost play by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher called Cardenio. Theobald also maintains that this version was based on manuscripts of another unnamed play written by Shakespeare. Lewis Theobald (1688 - 1744) wasa British textual editor and author - as well as a landmark figure both in the history of Shakespearean editing and in literary satire. This book will be of utility to students of English literature, and is highly recommended for lovers of theatre. Many antiquarian texts such as this - particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before - are increasingly hard to come by and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this book now, in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
