The use of photography in therapy has existed formany years and has been primarily used as an adjunctto verbal therapy or as a medium in Art Therapy. Thispaper explores the relationship between Drama Therapyand photographic based therapies. Differenttherapeutic self-portrait photography methodologiessuch as Photo Therapy, Therapeutic Photography, andPhotodrama are examined in relation to certainprinciple Drama Therapy theories and methodologies.An emphasis is placed on Jones 9 core processes ofDrama Therapy, Landys role method and theory, andSelf-Revelatory Performance methodology whenanalyzing the connections between disciplines. Thispaper will illustrate the links between self-portraitphotography and dramatic methodologies in therapy,and provide the Drama Therapist with an understandingof how self-portrait photography may work inconjunction with a Drama Therapy theoreticalorientation. Also, a review of the legal and ethicalaspects of using self-portrait photography in DramaTherapy will be addressed, giving the reader anunderstanding of the potential implications anddangers of using this medium in therapy.
