'Marooned on Molokai' began as a daily log kept of experiences on the 'befoh-time' island of Molokai, back in 2005 as the author was preparing to retire there. It evolved into a concurrent and leisurely examination of ancient Hawaii's cultural traditions set against the backdrop of efforts made by Molokaiian residents to preserve the culture of 'old Hawaii', through continued resistance towards modern commercial efforts to develop and exploit this last refuge of Hawaii's kanaka maoli (original) island heritage and preserve the old ways. It would prove both informative and instructive to anyone not originally from the islands who views Hawaii as a sort of Polynesian Disneyland recreational resort destination, rather than an ancient and highly respected Pacific island culture that has suffered much throughout its last several hundred years as an subordinated 'property' of the United States.
