There were four squadrons of the 91st Bomb Group (H) that flew out of Bassingbourn, England: the 322nd, 323rd, 324th, and the 401st. Through Mr. Harvey’s research, and the collection of the diaries of the other members of his father’s crew, you may now see and read the combined recollections of the B-17 bomber crew of the 323rd Bomb Squadron exactly as they were written immediately following their missions over fortress Germany. Covering the period from January through mid-June 1945, you will read where their troop ship. the Ile de France was escorted through mine fields and submarine nets as they departed Boston Harbor; of their landing after that disastrous final combat mission over Pilsen, Czechoslovakia where flak burst had taken out the number 3 engine and nearly all of the rear control cables; and finally of their landing back in the United States at Bradley field, Conn. where “. . . we got milk for the first time since leaving the USA.”
