Peetie, characterized as a young mallard dabbler duck, learns that thinking before acting allows him to plan for success. Curious about the world outside of his own safety niche leads him to venture outside of himself and enjoy new experiences.Peetie lives near the shore of a pond where he dabbles for food in shallow water, but, when he sees other ducks landing farther out in the pond that dive for food, he wants to get a closer look. He makes a plan to venture out to the deeper waters and in so doing meets a new friend, named Bennie, who has similarities as himself but also many differences. During a game of tag, they learn about each other and form a close bond.Bennie, however, has not learned to think before he acts and puts himself in a dangerous position as he glides across the waters to visit Peetie. As Peetie watches, his friend lies limp in the water after a shot rang out from a hunter. When the all the other ducks flee, Peetie, courageously, stays behind and thinks of a plan to save his friend. The book is filled with learning experiences about how physical characteristics relate to habitats; how diversity engenders interest; how thinking and planning lead to greater success; and how mutual bonds inspire courage and compassion.
