This true story is portrayed by a character known as Hilda Jay and includes self-help information using the acronym PUSHING.Hilda is a nurse, a midwife, and an educator who was recruited from the Caribbean to work in the United States of America (USA) when there was a shortage of nurses. She was very excited to start a new adventure, and her thoughts about this prospect were very positive. One can imagine the disappointment she felt when she experienced substandard treatments because of the color of her skin, especially while trying to achieve a terminal degree. This deviation from her high hopes and expectation left her feeling marginalized, frustrated, and discouraged, and almost killed her dream.Realizing that this treatment was not unique to her, but that many students of color are frustrated with the unfair treatment they experience in their programs at their different colleges/universities, she identified that the attrition rates of blacks, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in some college programs are extremely high. As a result, the author is prompted to look at ways to motivate these students to succeed and reach their goals. As a midwife, she uses her experience with women in labor and birth to identify seven principles that have been very helpful to her in achieving her goals despite tremendous obstacles.
