When Richard wrote, Irishmen Dont Cry, he said he would change the ending if he didnt die. Instead he decided to write a new book about living not dying. By forging a new contract with life he is able to learn from his past and confront his fears and doubts through tireless hope. During this journey he moves from an obsession like interest with ALS to an understanding of his life in totality. He uses his past to portray a life lived fully. He moves from feeling he is all alone on an island of hopelessness to a fuller acceptance of death.
