Senses of Paris

Twenty-five years after each of us journeyed to Paris in separate circumstances, what most struck us about the present-day city was the diversity and delight of its people. Two million people inhabit the most populated 100 square kilometres in the European Union, with around 20% of the people born outside of France. Staying in an apartment in Montmartre near Chateau Rouge allowed us to experience the colour and vivacity of the African community — its markets, hair salons, food and music. After our trip together, we thought about how we could record our journey to do justice to Paris as much as that can be done. Paris is about the senses.  Every aspect of the city imbibes the mind, body and soul with the sights of artistic excellence and architectural wonders, the taste of culinary delights, the scent of oil paint and spice, the sound of a jazz café, the touch of a hand.  The senses are the touchstone of our connection with Paris. You might consider this book an illustrated gift book where you can sip the pages at leisure, a gift for lovers of all things Parisian. For us, it has been a journey into marking a place with our own pen and brush through all our senses.
