Will Hamett, an introverted, New York city bound artist and professor of history, seeks relief from August heat in an unfamiliar Manhatten tavern and inadvertently finds himself cornered in a nightmarish simulacrum of the old American west. He is rescued by Kurt Junger, an enigmatic, dimly remembered acquaintance who, bizarrely, invites him on a backpacking trip to the Bighorn mountains. Disinclined, wary, but knowing the mans reputation for wilderness expertise and realizing the professional value of such an experience, he accepts. But this trip is to be no ordinary backpacking experience. The men are assaulted by gunmen, Kurt is wounded and their equipment is stolen, thus leaving Will, the extreme naif, to find a way to get them off the mountain. They are then abruptly confronted with a series of increasingly bizarre and ultimately terrifying events that challenge not only Wills physical and mental stamina, but his sense of reality itself. Stunned by the utter dissolution of logic and reason demanded by their circumstances, he knows nevertheless that he must adapt or the two of them will not survive. Do people wrenched from deep-rooted beliefs and attitudes ever return to a real world? And, if so, how is that world shaped by cultural and human contact?
