The syllable is probably the most easily identifiable of all phonological units. Although a few scholars have questioned its existence, the real question involves its construction. Spanish Syllable Structure tests the four most popular theories surrounding the syllable by examining its development from Latin into modern dialects of Spanish. At the end of each dialect section (Mexican, Tudancan, Colombian, and Dominican) is a chart that indicates what percentage of the data in that section supports each of the four theories under consideration. Also included is an explanation of how words are divided into syllables and a list of 300 Latin words and their Spanish reflexes.
