During the Portuguese-Dutch colonial rule of Jaffna in 1656, Alagavallis tranquil life has been turned upside down when her husband, Mudaliyar Poothathamby, in his aim to elevate his influence and power among the Dutch rulers, invites Captain Andrado over to their house for lunch. Captain Andrado catches a sight of Alagavalli from behind a curtain and is immediately besotted. What ensues is a complex story of obsession, faithfulness, jealousy, betrayal, revenge, and a curse where the conscience of an era steeped in prejudice, violence, and hypocrisy is poignantly shifted by the stamina of one womans struggle for justice.
