This book was originally written in 1897 by P. G. Hamerton, and comprises an unpublished portion of his previous work, Round My House (1876). It was discovered by his wife posthumously and put to print. Hamerton’s love of mountains drew him repeatedly to the summit of the highest hill in the neighbourhood of his dwelling, Mont Beuvray, and he invested so much time describing these visits that he believed these writings warranted their own volume. He consequently set this text aside to be published separately at a later date, but unfortunately this was an endeavour that he did not have time to complete. A wonderful description of a mountainous idyll, this rare text will appeal to lovers of nature writing, and constitutes a must-read for fans of Hamerton’s work. Philip Gilbert Hamerton was an English artist, critic, and author. Other notable works by thus author include: Etching and Etchers (1866) and Camp in the Highlands (1863). Many vintage texts such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition. It comes complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.
