As I was sitting there I was thinking how amazing it was, what people… often times, family and friends—will do to the psyche of a person over time. There are people who have the audacity to tell a young person, that he or she will never amount to anything. Subsequently, those young people will believe it or they will pattern their lives based on that belief or here’s the big one, particularly in the African American community—children will be told, “Your father was nothing and you’re going to be just like your father, so you’re going to be nothing.”So, I’m sitting there, my mind racing with the thoughts of my accomplishments and not the thoughts of my failures, which had pervaded my mind on many occasions over the preceding years, along with the residue in my mind of what I had been told all my life about not being able to achieve.
