If it is possible to identify and understand reasonswhy some people are able to respond without prejudice and the underlying mechanisms of prejudice reduction, then appropriateintervention programs and educational approaches may follow. Thisbook provides a review of the related literature ofclassic and contemporary theories of prejudice, prejudicereduction curriculum in education, a review of Facing History andOurselves (FHAO) research, a review of empathy with regard toprejudice reduction programs in education, and a review of the literatureexamining peoples ability to respond without prejudice. Thisstudy examines the effects of participation in an FHAO inspiredcurricular program on students internal and external motivation torespond without prejudice and on their levels of empathy. Analysis offindings suggest that being taught by an FHAO trained teacherhas an impact on students thoughts and perceptions aboutprejudice, racism, and empathy. The analysis helps shed some light onpeoples motivation to respond without prejudice, prejudice reductiontechniques, and the FHAO program and should be useful to educators, administrators, and researchers.
