In this book, we explore the role of emotionalintelligence as a new possible avenue of researchrelated to the adoption and maintenance of a healthydiet/weight. Emotional Intelligence is defined as theability to perceive, use, understand and regulateemotions (Mayer and Salovey 1997) and appears tocontribute to quality decision making and performancein multiple domains (Goleman 1995). Few studies, however, offer empirical evidence. We conducted four empirical studies and examined therole of emotional intelligence in decision making andperformance related to health (adoption andmaintenance of an healthy diet/weight). Our findings suggest the salience of the role ofspecific emotional intelligence abilities in decisionmaking and performance related to health. A trainingintervention on emotional intelligence and healthseems to activate mechanisms that might help peopleto use their knowledge in the right direction (i.e.adoption/maintenance of a healthy diet/weight).
