Therefore,academic libraries offer a unique model of workplacegendering and feminism. This qualitative,ethnographic study explores issues of feminism andgender in three academic libraries, each in adifferent region of the United States. Feministchallenges to bureaucracy emerged in the areas ofhierarchy, division of labor, competition andcollaboration, decision-making, and communication.Feminine practice in the libraries reflected privatesphere attitudes toward work (including values ofcommunity, emotionality, and caring). Giving voice tofeminine and feminist practice previously unexploredin conventional workplaces, this book provides newmodels for management and organizational theory.
