In 1841 the great Danish choreographer andballet-master, August Bournonville, made asix-month European journey that took him toFrance and – for the first time – to Italy. Duringhis travels he kept a weekly correspondence withhis wife, Helene, who had remained with theirsix children in Copenhagen. In these thirty-ninetravel letters Bournonville describes in fine andvivid details his many personal and culturalencounters and theatre experiences abroad witha spontaneity of expression that is conspicuouslyabsent from the majority of his other publishedwritings. Bournonville here literally brims withvision, opinion and wit.The 1841 travel letters are here gathered in bookform for the first time. They not only providea great deal of factual information from thisimportant European journey, but also reveal hisfine and sometimes even wild sense of humour, which he clearly restrained or suppressed in hislater, published autobiographical writings.Together these travel letters represent a fascinatingand unique insight into his true artist’s psyche, his professional career abroad, and his personalcharacter as a man. They reveal in fine detail howsome of his most popular ballets were created anddirectly inspired from the strong impressions ofart and nature that he had received during this, the perhaps most fruitful of his many artisticjourneys.
